Faber is saying that without books, classics are lost and everything we once knew has been altered in a way that no one remembers what anything was before it is now. The son of God used to perform miracles for the people, now he is “one of the ‘family’” doing advertisements one the flickering box of infinite joy. Jesus is no longer a figure of worship, but a character in a T.V. show. The government has brainwashed people to the point where no one has any free thought, making it easy to eliminate any opposing groups and religions like Christianity. The other thing is that the government is not just going after religious people with their brain washing using Jesus or God, anyone who watches is going to want to buy whatever product that they are trying to sell. Faber could have spoken up to stop the burning of the books, be he is too much of a coward to have done so. He predicted that books were going to become a thing of the past, but still did nothing to stop it when the firemen were told to burn every book in existence. To some it would make sense to stand up for what you believe in, others would disagree because of the situation. If you were out numbered in a fight and had no chance of win would you still fight? It seems like a futile effort on your part and won’t help with anything. Faber standing up would have had the same result as him not standing up and out, only Faber might not be around to start a revolution in the here and now of the book. There is no good outcome of this dilemma. It’s either try and fail or give in and fail. Getting books to the people now would be great counter right now, in the book.
